Classical Philosophy
"Socrates, the Greek philosopher, said, 'know thyself.' The vital issue man faces today is that he does not know himself. This lack of knowledge puts him into the terrible position of trying everything to avoid suffering. But suffering is nothing more than the lack of knowledge of how to prevent it."

Interesting choice, the use of the word suffering and not pain. After all the Spartans, your namesake ancestors, had long ago mastered the tremendous physiological benefits of strengthening the body and mind through enduring pain and hardship. They achieved levels of human performance modern man can only envision in cgi-enhanced epic films. To the glory of classical Greece and the memory of the Spartans who defended it.
